Robert Moses' Kin review: An enchanted spell
by Allan Ulrich
San Francisco Chronicle, Monday, February 21, 2011

"Robert Moses' Fable and Faith proved one of the season's great charmers. The 11 dancers of Robert Moses' Kin and a host of collaborative artists have scrutinized the Western heritage of fairy tales and re-interpreted them with a pinch of irony and a huge helping of imagination."

The Cinderella Principle: try these on, see if they fit

Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Novellus Theater

Boundary breaking Robert Moses’ Kin dance company presented the world premiere of The Cinderella Principle, February 25-27th at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Novellus Theater. This remarkable new interdisciplinary work showcased Moses’ dynamic choreographic style and athletic, intelligent dance, in a project that explored non-traditional family structures and the formation of identity. The Cinderella Principle represents a creative process that has evolved from in-depth interviews with families throughout the Bay Area, and represents a tapestry of voices about identity, race, class, gender, and ultimately, love.

The Cinderella Principle marks a significant new direction for the company, weaving text - based on family interviews by award-winning documentary playwright Anne Galjour - into the performance. Nationally recognized violinist/composer Todd Reynolds has created an original score and will be performing live with star beat boxer Kid Beyond . Video projections are created by Guggenheim fellow and Alpert Award winner Bill Morrison."

ROBERT MOSES' KIN 2005 WINTER SEASON
"The President's Daughter"

"Dances that represent the epitome of craft.”
- Boston Herald
"Nothing short of electrifying.”
- Chicago Sun Times

Robert Moses' Kin dance company, celebrated around the country and dubbed a "local treasure" by the San Francisco Chronicle, returned to the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco in February to celebrate its tenth anniversary season with the world premiere of “The President's Daughter.” Inspired by the 1853 novel of the same name by William Wells Brown, “The President's Daughter” examines the dichotomy between the public and private lives of various iconic Americans, such as Founding Father Thomas Jefferson and U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond, both of whom secretly had illegitimate children with African American women. Was there a confederacy of silence surrounding these men that made it possible for them to hide their private lives? How did they reconcile their religious lives with their personal moral lapses? What do their private actions reveal about their public selves? Also on the program will be excerpts from “Cause,” the company's recently premiered collaboration with Youth Speaks concerning the legacy of hate, and the hauntingly beautiful ensemble piece, “other gods.”
